About this research initiative

The National Service Framework for Long Term Neurological Conditions (NSF for LTNC), published by the Department of Health in March 2005, set out the Quality Requirements (QRs) that health and social care services should meet in order to improve the services they provide for people with these conditions.

This research initiative was set up in 2006 by The Department’s Policy Research Programme to assist implementation of the NSF. It was intended that evidence from the research could be used to help measure the impact the NSF was making on the way services are designed and developed. It was also hoped it would add to our understanding of the nature, experience and management of long term neurological conditions.

During 2006 - 2007 a programme of seven studies were set up, followed by four more in 2008. The initiative will finish in 2011, when all eleven studies are completed and a summary report will be produced.

The LTNC RI is managed and overseen by a small team, led by the Department and supported by an Advisory Group. Members of the group have a wide range of experience, interest and expertise of living with, and researching, neurological conditions between them. They contribute to the programme in a voluntary capacity. The Research Teams report twice a year to the Department and Advisory Group.

About the Policy Research Programme

The Policy Research Programme (PRP) is a national programme of research dedicated to providing an evidence base for policy-making in the Department of Health. It provides information to the Secretary of State for Health and his Ministers directly and through policy directorates in the Department. It works alongside other national research programmes and consults when necessary with policy research programmes in other government departments and a wide variety of stakeholders.
